Councils

Full Council Funding

COUNCIL INVESTMENT

  • Cancel historic local authority debt to free up money for urgent investment.

COUNCIL FUNDING
  • Full council funding.

  • End Bedroom tax, which saves on council court arrears costs.

CUT DOWN COSTS OF COUNCILS

  • England’s councils to be still its counties, but only one council per county, headed by direct-voted by public Elected Mayor (paid full time wages, not just a council leader’s fee). Nothing to do with merely ceremonial mayors appointed by councillors.

  • Study how Greece (who invented democracy, with that word a Greek word) organise their Elected Mayors.

  • Saves on council costs.

  • Local people to have your
    Council Charter of Rights and
    free appeals service.

TAX HAVENS AND COUNCIL CONTRACTS

  • All firms with a government or council contract over £250,000 will pay tax in UK and train UK workers.

  • No company will receive taxpayer-funded contracts if it, or its parent company, is headquartered in a tax haven.

HELP FOR YOU

  • End Bedroom Tax.

  • No to council / social housing rent and council tax increases.

  • Councils to ensure the building of at least 100,000 high-standard, eco-friendly, affordable council and social rented homes over the next five years, on brownfield sites.

  • Suspend evictions for debt and introduce rent controls now to end profiteering by rip-off landlords.

  • Scrap the council tax.
  • Replace it with a new graduated wealth tax based on ability to pay (calculated by income) and that will exempt all those on low incomes.

COUNCIL WORKERS’ PAY

  • For an immediate increase of the minimum council wage to £16 an hour living wage and for it to then rise in line with inflation or wages, whichever is higher.
  • No exemptions.

  • Cut the working week to a maximum of 35 hours with no loss of pay.

  • Minimum wage of £16 per hour, for council paid carers, who also should be paid travel time, and no longer do just 15 minute care visits.

PUBLIC TOILETS

• Rows of single cubicle free public toilets in town centres on the free car parks
(3 unisex, 1 with baby changing facilities, 1 larger disabled) and suburban shopping centres.

FREE TOWN CENTRE CAR PARKING

  • Redeploy the council employed traffic wardens, into security guards in public spaces, to protect shoppers from muggers, pick pockets, the banned e-scooters, and to insist bicycle riders walk not ride their bikes through pedestrian only areas. Provided with uniform (although civilians in status), stab proof vests, and launderette tickets to clean uniforms.

  • Redeploy the council employed traffic wardens, into security guards in public spaces, to demand and enforce the new Highway Code, with the new Rule for drivers, motorcyclists, horse riders and cyclists.
