Better Amenities

• Free government paid training to become an HGV driver (currently, 2021, for example, is £3,500). 

• Free government paid training to become ADR driver training certificate to drive petrol tankers (ADR is the European Agreement on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). Was £672 for the 5 day course in 2021.  

• Employer to pay for the lorry driver's five days of training every five years, in order to keep their Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) (lorry driver qualification) updated. At the moment can cost the lorry driver up to £4,500.

• CPC modules reformed so industry and job specific, making them relevant to all drivers in the sector. There should be an assessment at the end of each module to ensure that drivers have fully understood the module. 

• End new IR35 reforms, meaning agency lorry drivers must pay more tax.


• Lorry drivers’ right for facilities for their overnight truck stops, including right to access to toilets. 

• Free overnight lorry parking on motorway service stations. 

• Truck stop facilities on industrial estates.

• Increased wages. Automatic trade union membership and collective bargaining of pay. 
 
• Decent hours of work.
 
• Right to heating (for driving or sleeping driver in cab) and a chill cabinet (for food safety).
